“House Sales” like Eden Hall, next Saturday March 7th, are not held as often as they once were, and it was good to be called in again to mount such an event, following the successes we have had in the past with various auctions ‘on the premises’, such as Lemmington Hall, Lady Tankerville’s, Lord Vinson’s, etc. Eden Hall is only just across the border, and as you will observe from the catalogue letter from Lady Loch, it is the end of an era for her family home.

And with such historical provenance connected to the famous Loch family – her father the well respected artist Alexander Beauchamp Cameron, and her own fame in the horse world – the treasures are of an enormous variety. It has been quite a rush job getting it all together, and it is going to be a bit of a squeeze in the upstairs saleroom, but from what started as a small, 250-lot auction, we now have almost 400 lots!

lot 230

We have stirred it all up, cataloguing the surplus pieces as the house contents have gradually been packed up for their new destination. However, inevitably, trying to squeeze the contents of this ten-bedroomed home into a small three-bedroomed Suffolk farmhouse has meant much shedding of furnishings, decorations and family heirlooms.

So the antique George III silver coffee pot sits next to a corn bin from the yard, the garden bench next to some hand-tailored suits, the detailed Charles Lauder watercolour next to a sword plundered from the Crimean War.

lot 160

We have managed to put some sections of the sale together, such as the wine cellar, the contents of the tack room and the vintage clothing, but generally it is an outing of great variety right across the board, appealing to someone furnishing their first home as well as to the fine connoisseur.

It is all “on view” and online NOW, with every lot illustrated, so have a browse and leave some bids. At Eden Hall itself, we are open to view from 10am to 6pm on Thursday and Friday, with the auction itself starting at 11am on Saturday morning.
